Giving Back

Giving Back

Do you love Christmas and look forward to all of the gifts you hope to receive? I know I do! I’m sure we all get a good variety of gifts this season, but have you ever thought about the kids that don’t get anything for Christmas? There are plenty of kids in Springfield that live in poverty and their families cannot afford to have a Christmas in the same sense that we do. Even though we can’t really change anything about how they live, we can find ways to help the less fortunate to have a good Christmas!

I’m sure you visit the mall during Christmas, so you’ve probably seen the Angel Tree. The Angel Tree is a charity drive created by the Salvation Army that gives kids the things they need and want for Christmas. There are families in need who sign up to be sponsored by the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army places tags with the child’s gender, age, and wishes on an angel tag, and place them on Christmas trees throughout the mall, and other stores, during the holiday season. If you want to help a child in need, you simply select a tag off of the Angel Tree, view their list, and make purchases for them. The kids you find on the Angel Tree range from babies to teens. Their wishes range from things like a simple baby rattle or hair straighteners to more practical things like new shoes, socks, or jeans. After reviewing their list, you purchase the items and then drop them off at the Salvation Army by their set deadline so they can be distributed to the families.

The Salvation Army also has the red kettle drive from November to December. You can volunteer to ring the bell for the kettle at a variety of businesses around town, as the Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers. They have even made it easy for you to host a kettle virtually, so you can raise money on your social media accounts rather than in person. It also helps if you can make a donation whenever you pass a red kettle. All of the money is used on the kids who don’t get picked off of the Angel Tree to be sponsored for Christmas. If the Salvation Army still has extra money, it is used on various things throughout the year. They run a pair of homeless shelters in Springfield, one for families and one for men. Additionally, they give out school supplies to families in need and donate to families in poverty in various other ways from helping with housing costs, utility costs, and even auto repairs in certain instances. The Red Kettle Drive is the largest fundraiser the Salvation Army has each year, and the funds raised are essential in providing for the less fortunate in our communities.

So, now that you’ve heard about some of the ways on how to give back to the community, how will you give back this year? Even if you can’t spend tons of money on an extra child, you can always volunteer. Remember that the Christmas season isn’t about presents, but about giving and kindness. You should try your hardest to give back and help those less fortunate than you are, especially this year. Merry Christmas!
