NJHS Bell Ringing

Outside of stores and other popular public places, you hear the sound of a small bell. As you walk towards the sound, you see a red metal box and a person smiling. That person is ringing the bell. Why? This person is volunteering for the Salvation Army Bell Ringing.

All this ringing started on Sat. November 23rd, this year. This tradition has been going on since 1891 and started in San Francisco. The Salvation Army helps people in the Ozarks buy clothing, food, shelter, and for the holiday season, toys and presents for children whose parent’s can’t afford it.

On November 23rd, the Cherokee students in National Junior Honor Society went out in groups and rang the bell for the Salvation Army. Last year, we collected over $1200 from the bell ringers around the Ozarks.

This year, I want you to think about how you can help your community, especially during the holiday season.
