Thanksgiving is a great time for food, family, and naps. But some Springfield community members are in for a big treat. They choose the Turkey Trot. This is a family and pet-friendly event for all ages that takes place on Thanksgiving day. This event also has a really large impact on our community. All of the proceeds benefit the Springfield-Greene County Park Board and Developmental Center of the Ozarks (DCO).

You are probably wondering, what does the money do? The money that goes to the Park Board helps provide scholarships for kids who qualify for free and reduce lunch. The rest of the money goes to the Developmental Center of the Ozarks. They use their portion of the money to help kids (ages 6 weeks to 6 years) and adults (ages 55 and older without a disability and 18 or older with a disability) with disabilities. They provide therapy and daycare services for those ages.

Even though the money goes to local non-profits, there is great fun involved too! There were prizes for best costumes (people and dog), most registered people in a family, oldest and youngest registered, and some other fun categories. The prizes including things like free registrations for other local runs, free passes for ice skating, and more. This year the event had about 7,500 people participating. The total attendance included kids, adults, and pets. This event has a lot of fun opportunities for everyone in the family. The event is on Thanksgiving Day and can be a great wake up call for your holiday.
