Welcome to a terrifying time! A time of frights, scares, ghouls, goblins, and costumes! Not to mention parties! What’s the history of Halloween anyway?

A long time ago in the 1800’s, Halloween marked the end of the summer harvest and the beginning of the winter harvest. On October 31 of every year, the people that believed ghosts and spirits would come back from the afterlife would perform a special ritual called the Samhain. The ritual was performed by the Celtics (or the Celts) at the celebration of the Samhain (pronounced sow-in). In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, also known as Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. Instead of depending on fate and letting what was supposed to happen to occur, people went to these Druids for answers and for prophecies of the future to know what was going to happen. (Not the most accurate way to get information) most of the time they were wrong. During the Samhain, everyone would bring crops or animals as a sacrifice.

Now, I know what you’re thinking; What does trick-or-treating have to do with this? Well, when witchcraft was a thing, every woman that appreciated the craft would gather to prepare pranks on their husbands. Trick-or-treating comes from the tricks. Sometimes, the pranks would benefit the lover, but other times it was a dastardly prank. Usually, the women would be true and kind and give their lovers a treat. Sometimes they got a trick for their crimes like cheating or lying, even stealing. Well, Happy Halloween! Be careful, you never know when the witches will deliver a trick.
