*Disclaimer-This is in no way hating on my girl Fergie, she is an incredibly talented musician who just happened to butcher the national anthem and get turned into a meme because of it. Also, if you by chance are part of the 10% of the population who hasn’t seen it, the link above will take you to the video, watching it may give you some much-needed context.*

For all those who had the delight of witnessing American singer-songwriter, Stacy Ann “Fergie” Ferguson’s “sultry” rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, you can probably agree with me that her take on the classic anthem, left most viewers either cringing, or gasping for air in between laughs. No matter who you are, seeing this (especially from someone as talented as Fergie) was a total shock. Her interpretation of the song has sparked controversy among many social media users. Some of these accounts claimed that Fergie’s performance could be considered disrespectful. This is because the song itself is an ode to our fight in the War of 1812, as well as the strength and perseverance that our nation has continued to carry all of these years, and it shouldn’t be changed to something more “sultry” or “seductive”. They feel as if she could have left the song alone, and creatively experimented with one of many others songs. Others though, were quick to jump to Fergie’s defense, claiming that she wasn’t trying to be disrespectful, but instead, she was just trying to switch things up a bit and be more original with her performance. They pointed out that the message of the song wasn’t altered in any way, just the melody and tempo. Personally, I don’t think that she was being disrespectful necessarily, but this sudden shift in creativity wasn’t something that needed to happen, and she most likely would’ve been better off sticking with the original tune. What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter, so feel free to voice your opinion down below. Happy Spring!
