Guest Speaker: Officer Chris Nuccio

On January 22 Officer Chris Nuccio came to Cherokee’s Spanish class to talk about how knowing two languages has helped him out not only on the field but also in life. When he was in his last week of training to become an officer he found out there were no other Spanish speaking officers in his class and counting him only six in the force. This meant he might be needed a little more than your average police officer.

Officer Nuccio was originally in the military and after finishing his time in the military he became an officer. During his presentation, he mentioned a couple of stories where if he were there or the officer on duty spoke another language some people could have been kept out of a big mess. One incident happened at a party so and an officer was called to the scene. When the officer got there he told everyone to put their hands up. Now the people at the party only spoke Spanish and did not understand what the man was saying. One man reached into his back pocket to pull out his wallet and show the officer his ID. Now the officer did not understand this and thought the man was reaching for a gun, so he tazed him. Luckily the man was okay but he could have avoided this entire mess if Officer Nuccio could have been there.

Office Nuccio presentation was very intriguing to the students and me. In conclusion, knowing a second language can be very helpful whether you are helping your community or simply run into someone who doesn’t speak English.
