For almost exactly a century, Jazz has been a music style that people use to express their individuality and ingenuity interlaced with their individual emotions. Every art form is hard to formulate, practice and execute, whether it’s singing, creating artwork or playing music. Every form of creativity requires hard work to perfect. For Cherokee Middle School’s 8th-grade Jazz Band, this is a task that they have already learned to overcome. With the help of our very own band director, Mr. Bruner, our 8th-grade Jazz Band has brought a very adept and yet joyful side of music to our school and have developed it’s members into better musicians. In the words of one Sylvie Black,”Jazz Band to me is a way to learn different styles of music that are interesting to listen to and fun to play. I love being a part of the Jazz Band because I have learned so much and become a much better musician. The Jazz Band has become like a family, hopefully for all of us, and I’m so glad I’ve gotten to be a part of it”. Recently, the Jazz Band traveled to Kansas City along with Kickapoo’s Jazz Band and participated in a Jazz festival. They received a 1 rating and although they have yet to receive their place out of the three middle school Jazz Bands that participated, there is no doubt in my mind that they did amazing. This is truly a marvelous program that any student would benefit from being a part of. In the words of McKenna Fink, when asked about Jazz Band,”It’s fun and fun. We learn a lot of life lessons because of Mr. Bruner. He is basically our life counselor. Amen. Hallelujah. I’m done now.” And when I asked another student about Jazz Band, Ryan Harris, he was simply confused as to if I wanted a philosophical or analytical answer and eventually answered with an obscure rhyming riddle,”When you go your way, you go away from Yehway”. The point is, Jazz Band is a wondrous program. If you are coming into 7th grade this next year and have any interest participating, you can talk to Mr. Bruner or Mr. Zinecker.

Jazz band is my favorite everything. Class, hobby, fine art. It is my favorite thing about going to school, and it is one of the only things I look forward to every day. Jazz Band is my life, and I never want to leave. My band mates are like a family (a dysfunctional and annoying family).
